The Law Offices of Omar Figueroa, one of California’s leading cannabis, hemp, and psychedelic law firms, announced today that the firm is expanding to New York, where it will continue to serve clients in those emerging markets. Increasingly, California-based cannabis plant-touching and ancillary companies are looking eastward, hoping to bring expertise from operating in the world’s largest legal cannabis market into another expected juggernaut.
“If you can make it in California, you can make it anywhere,” Omar Figueroa, the firm’s founder and principal attorney said of the move, turning an old adage on its head as it pertains to the cannabis industry. “New York is poised to become one of the world’s largest cannabis markets. It already has a medical cannabis industry as well as a robust industrial hemp program. Furthermore, there is exciting research and other work related to psychedelics happening at institutions across the State.”
The Law Offices of Omar Figueroa has been laying its groundwork in the Empire State for some time. The firm is a member of the New York City Cannabis Industry Association, the Hudson Valley Cannabis Industry Association, and the National Cannabis Industry Association, among other affiliations.
Figueroa published the first comprehensive compendium of New York’s cannabis laws and regulations, New York Cannabis Laws and Regulations 2021. He has also published a series of reference books titled California Cannabis Laws and Regulations.
Founded in 1998, the Law Offices of Omar Figueroa is recognized as a leader in the field, especially in the Golden State. Before there was a legal cannabis industry, the firm provided freedom defense services to nonviolent persons arrested for cannabis offenses, and was active in the legalization movement.
Since the passage of California’s Proposition 64 in 2016, the Law Offices of Omar Figueroa has been providing transactional legal services to individuals and businesses in California’s cannabis industry. Since its inception, the firm has also broadened their offerings to serve clients in the hemp and psychedelics spaces.
The services the firm will offer in New York include application development and preparation; business formations and corporate governance, contract drafting, review and negotiation; intellectual property protection and enforcement; and policy advocacy, among other services.
The Law Office of Omar Figueroa’s New York branch will be staffed by Andrew Kingsdale, Esq., a Super Lawyer who has worked with the firm since 2018. Andrew has been licensed to practice law in New York since 2007, and last year was appointed as a member of the New York Bar Association’s Committee on Cannabis Law.
“Like California, New York has its own unique cannabis culture and history,” Kingsdale said. “As a kid I attended elementary school at P.S. 321 on Seventh Ave., not far from our new office location. Life is coming full circle! I’m proud to be returning with this awesome team.”
The office’s other attorneys, including Figueroa as well as Lauren Mendelsohn, have all lived in or near New York and are familiar with the local “social, business and political atmosphere,” Figueroa said.
“Our first-hand experience engaging with policymakers at the local, state, and federal levels will enable us to help shape the future of New York’s cannabis, hemp, and psychedelic industries,” Mendelsohn said.
“Both California and New York will be major players in the global cannabis market,” Mendelsohn said. “As someone who grew up in New York and ultimately left the East Coast in part to access legal medical cannabis in California, it’s amazing to see how policies have progressed there. Given New York’s size and importance, I believe it’s only a matter of time until cannabis prohibition ends nationwide.”
