DEAR EDITOR:
Supporters of legalized cannabis are relentless.
It seems that it’s just a matter of time before they get a bill passed, either by ballot box or by the Legislature. I feel the most important aspect to any legislation is to hold users, growers and sellers responsible for keeping it away from our youth, public places, our air, our food and our drink.
I think the best way to keep users responsible is to make it a privilege to buy or grow the product. One way to do this is to require an endorsement directly on their drivers license. They would need separate endorsements for buying and growing. The endorsement to grow the product for personal use would stipulate the product grown would have to be consumed on the same property as it is grown. It cannot be sold. If that person violates the rules, he / she could lose his / her privilege to grow. Likewise, any product transported would have to be kept in its original, unopened package and kept away from minors. Also, the endorsement should be approved by all residents of his / her household. In many places where legalization has occurred, people have a hard time avoiding contact and minors have far-too-easy access.
It’s up to Ohio to protect its public.
