EATONTOWN – As many as three businesses will be allowed to set up storefronts and sell recreational cannabis, according to the rules approved by the Borough Council.
The borough, which was first at the Shore to have a medical marijuana dispensary, will permit the businesses on its main commercial corridor along routes 35 & 36. While two new licenses will be made available for retail cannabis, a third license is expected to go to the Garden State Dispensary, the medical marijuana dispenser, to expand its operations to include recreational sales.
The new rules also permit supporting industries such as those involved in the cultivation, manufacturing, wholesale and distribution of recreational cannabis. Those businesses would be regulated to Industrial Way.
The rules do not permit delivery services from having a business in town, though, they do allow delivery services from other towns to operate here.

The borough is looking to collect $10,000 for a license and 2% sales tax on retail, manufacturing, cultivation and distribution sales, and 1% on wholesale sales.
Eatontown voters turned out in favor of legalizing recreational marijuana at last November’s election, with 4,414 “yes” votes to 2,176 “no” votes.
The council voted 5-1 to approve the new recreational cannabis ordinance. Councilman Mark Regan Jr. was the lone “no” vote.

Towns have until the state-mandated deadline of Aug. 21 to regulate recreational cannabis within their jurisdictions.
